Desktop GIS
ArcGIS desktop provides a collection of software products that create, edit, import,
map, query, analyze, and publish geographic information. These desktop products
share the same core applications, user interface, and development environment so
users can share their work with others. Maps, data, symbology map layers,
geoprocessing models, custom tools and interfaces, reports, and metadata can be
accessed interchangeably.
A wide-ranging suite of optional extensions expands the functional capabilities
of these products with specialized GIS tools. |

Server GIS
Server GIS complements ArcGIS Desktop by allowing GIS analysts to author cost-effective
maps, globes, and geoprocessing tasks on their desktops and publish them via a server
using integrated tools. GIS functions can then be delivered as services throughout
the enterprise. Server GIS allows GIS capabilities to be delivered to large
numbers of users over networks. Enterprise GIS users connect to central GIS
servers using traditional desktop GIS as well as Web browsers, mobile computing
devices, and digital appliances. |

Mobile GIS
Mobile GIS is the expansion of a geographic information system (GIS) from the
office into the field. A mobile GIS enables field based personnel to capture,
store, update, manipulate, analyze and display geographic information. Mobile
GIS integrates one or more of the following technologies:
- Mobile devices
- Global Positioning System (GPS)
- Wireless communications for Internet GIS access
Mobile GIS enables organizations to add real-time information to their database
and applications, speeding up analysis, display, and decision making by using up-to-date,
more accurate spatial data.
